Who is affected by the regulation on EU citizens

  • Citizens of European Union member states and citizens of EEA member states (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein),
  • German nationals only if they return to Germany after having exercised their right to freedom of movement in another EU Member State (taking up residence in an EU Member State for the purposes of study, employment, etc.).
  • Union citizens who are studying in Germany are entitled to family reunification, provided that the person joining them is granted maintenance in Latvia. The information on ‘Reunification of parents/parents-in-law and adult children (up to the age of 21) with a Union citizen’ is relevant in this regard.

What kind of documents need to be submitted

These documents depend on the type of visa you are applying for and must be submitted in addition to the standard proofs:

Marriage certificate with apostille[1] or proof of a registered (same-sex) civil partnership and notarized translation

(original document and one non-certified copy)

[1] An apostille is only required for those documents that have not been issued in an EU or EEA country.

Passport copy of the spouse / fiancé / registered partner living in Germany

Current extended registration certificate (erweiterte Meldebescheinigung) of the spouse / registered life partner in Germany

(original document and one non-certified copy)

The registration certificate may not be older than 6 months and must contain details of the civil status..

Securing a livelihood in Germany must be proven by means of suitable documents from the reference person: e.g. confirmation of employment, employment certificate, pay slips, proof of self-employment, proof of assets/income in the case of family reunification with non-working persons.

  • Please refrain from submitting status requests. Status requests do not speed up the visa process.
  • Processing time: About two to three weeks, in individual cases shorter or longer.
  • If the Embassy has questions during the course of the visa procedure or if additional documents need to be submitted, we will contact you directly.
